We Should

Do Better

Who We Seek to Help

Those we work to assist are:

    • our parents
    • our teachers
    • our firefighters
    • our veterans
    • our social workers

and so many others who have helped us to grow and build our country. They are wise and experienced– people who have helped others to realize the joy and dignity of life.

But they are also people who are living on the edge.

Many have incomes that are far below the poverty level. They struggle to make ends meet; and yet they are vital, richly experienced people who seek the same life we all do - a life of health, joy and dignity.

Meet a resident: Minnie

Minnie is an 85-year-old African American woman who recently fell and broke her hip. She was taken to a rehabilitation center to heal, but during her stay she was notified that her home had been condemned and she will have nowhere to go once she is discharged. Minnie has no family to speak of, and she will be homeless if she does not find a place to live very quickly. She depends entirely on her monthly Social Security check, but was able to manage independently while living in her home, albeit in deplorable conditions.

There are very few choices for seniors like Minnie. The waiting lists for quality affordable senior communities are long, and Minnie doesn’t have the luxury of time. Once she is discharged from rehab she is on her own. This is the plight of low-income seniors right now, and a harbinger of circumstances to come as the Baby Boom generation begins to flood the market.

WeShouldDoBetter.org is working to ensure that every low-income senior who needs a safe, clean, service-enriched, and affordable place to call home will be able to do so.

Help people like Minnie who should not end up without a home or a place to turn.

I love living at St. Paul Village because...

"This village has kept me from having to go to a nursing home, and I'm very thankful."
