We Should

Do Better

Our seniors deserve better.

Consider these facts:

  • One in four of Ohio seniors over 65 now lives in substandard housing.
  • Someone turns 65 every 7.7 seconds in America.
  • Currently, for every available subsidized apartment, 9 seniors turning 65 qualify to live there - and as more people turn 65, that shortage will increase.
  • Some seniors who need some extra help with everyday tasks have no other choice but to move to a Medicaid-funded nursing home.
  • A Medicaid-funded nursing home costs taxpayers about $133 per day – almost 10 times the costs of subsidized housing.

It’s a developing crisis.

Most retirement-age seniors have worked all their lives. But some have had to care for ailing parents or children, or they have faced a medical emergency of their own that drained their savings. Some, who have been lucky enough to find an apartment, may need some assistance with everyday tasks to stay there independently.

As legislators cut budgets, the programs to support affordable housing for deserving elders will suffer dramatically. That means more seniors will unnecessarily be moving into Medicaid-funded nursing homes that cost almost 10 times more than a subsidized apartment.

There IS a solution … a win/win for both elder Americans and for taxpayers.

Episcopal Retirement Homes has created WeShouldDoBetter.org to tackle these issues head on and offer better solutions that help taxpayers and legislatures save money. For example, we provide fitness and nutritional programs along with spiritual and social services that help keep them healthy and independent – therefore shortening or even eliminating costly nursing home stays.

The good news is that providing housing for them just makes more sense both financially and morally than putting them in a nursing home.
